American celebrity who was killed in a plane crash just as her career was starting.

Aaliyah was an American singer, who was tragically killed in a mysterious plane crash at the age of 22 in August 2001.

Life

Aaliyah was born in New York City and was raised in Detroit.

She began her career at aged 12, when she was signed with Jive Records and her uncle Barry Hankerson's Blackground Records.

Her uncle introduced her to R. Kelly, who became her mentor, as well as lead songwriter and producer of her debut album, "Age Ain't Nothing but a Number". She was allegedly married to R. Kelly when she was a child.

She released her second album in 1996.

Just before her death, she starred in films and was in the process of releasing her third and final album. It was ominously self titled.

Death

In August 2001, Aaliyah flew to The Bahamas to film a music video for her her song 'Rock the Boat'. On the way back to Florida, the plane crashed, killing all on board. Aaliyah's body was found 20 feet away from the wreckage. She was sat strapped into her seat and slumped over to her left.

The pilot was later found to have traces of cocaine and alcohol in his body, and was not qualified to fly the aircraft designated for the flight. Aaliyah's family later filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the operator of the aircraft, Blackhawk International Airways, which was settled out of court.

20 years after her death, in August 2021, a new book published claims that she was carried on board unconscious after being given a sedative.[1] She was allegedly given a sleeping pill, because she didn't want to get on the plane.[2]
