Adrian Fortescue "spent the first few years of his life in a Japanese internment camp. Returning to England after the war, he was educated at Uppingham, an exclusive independent school in Leicestershire, before going on to earn a classics degree at Cambridge University."[2] He was a son-in-law of Winston Churchill.[2]

This culminated, after he had left Lord Cockfield’s office, in four years as the Commission’s Director-General for Justice and Home Affairs."[3]
In 1972 when, on secondment from the UK civil service, he served in the cabinet of Commission Vice-President Sir Christopher Soames.[2]
Fortescue was a Director General of Justice and Internal Affairs of the European Commission.
