Barry Gardiner (born 10 March 1957) is the Labour Party MP for Brent North serving as Shadow International Trade Secretary since 2016.

On 8 January 2020, Barry Gardiner announced he was considering standing in the 2020 Labour Party leadership contest saying he could “energise” the race to succeed Jeremy Corbyn:

“I want to be sure it gets the kind of dynamism into the debate that it needs.”

The following day he ended his short-lived campaign, saying:

“I am now clear that at this late stage I cannot secure sufficient nominations to proceed to the next round. I have therefore decided not to stand for the leadership at this time.”[1]

Parliamentary career

Barry Gardiner was made Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in April 2004, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Trade and Industry in May 2005 and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs between May 2006 and June 2007.

In July 2007 he was appointed by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to be his special representative on forestry.[2] He left his position in September 2008, after having accused Mr Brown of "vacillation, loss of international credibility and timorous political manoeuvres that the public cannot understand".[3]
