Cherie, Lady Blair also known professionally as Cherie Booth, is an English barrister and writer. She is married to Tony Blair, the British prime minister from 1997 to 2007.

Early Life

Cherie Blair grew up in Liverpool. Her father, actor Tony Booth, left the family when Cherie was two years old. He rose to popularity in the 1960s with his role in the BBC sitcom Till Death Us Do Part.

Booth studied law at the London School of Economics and Political Science. In 1976 Booth met Tony Blair, who, like her, had applied for an internship with Labor politician Derry Irvine. Although Booth got the advertised internship position, Blair was also hired as a part-time employee. Booth and Blair were married on March 29, 1980. The marriage produced four children: Euan Anthony, Nicholas John, Kathryn Hazel and Leo George. Cherie Blair is a practicing Catholic, and also practices some New Age beliefs[1]

Booth and Blair ran for Labor in the 1983 general election. While Booth was defeated in her constituency of North Thanet in Kent, Blair was elected to the House of Commons in Sedgefield.

Career

In the late 1990s, Booth set up his own law firm, Matrix Law, specializing in the European Convention on Human Rights.

From 1999 to 2006 she was Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University.

In 2002, Booth faced criticism when it was revealed that she had illegally bought two Bristol apartments with the help of Australian Peter Foster. The affair was dubbed the "Cherigate" in the British media.

On the 24th/25th May 2007 Cherie Blair performed at the 4th International Human Rights Forum (IHRF) in Lucerne/Switzerland. She spoke out in favor of the 2003 war in Iraq.

Emails released from Hillary Clinton’s private account show that Cherie Blair lobbied the US secretary of state on behalf of the crown prince of Qatar, writing:“As you know I have good links to the Qataris.” In a 2010 email marked confidential[2], Blair sought to arrange a meeting between Clinton and Qatar’s young crown prince, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani. Blair had previously denied she acted as a lobbyist for the family.[3]

In fiction

In the 2010 Robert Harris novel The Ghost (filmed in 2010 by Roman Polanski as the Ghost Writer), the character Adam Lang is a thinly-disguised version of Tony Blair.[4] The fictional counterpart of Cherie Blair, Ruth Lang, is depicted as a sinister manipulator of her husband. The hidden message found at the end reveals that "Langs wife Ruth studying in 76 was recruited as a CIA agent in America by Professor Paul Emmett of Harvard University"[5].
