David Addington is an American lawyer who worked as legal counsel (2001–2005) and Chief of Staff (2005–2009) to Vice President Dick Cheney.

Career

In 2006 he was memorably termed "most powerful man you’ve never heard of".[1] Addington was a big proponent of some of Bush’s most notorious legal abuses, such as torture and warrantless mass surveillance, and is a loyal follower of the so-called unitary executive theory. In 2009 he was ranked #7 on a list of "The Top 43 Appointees Who Helped Make Bush The Worst President Ever"[2] His support for torture lead to his conviction in 2012 for crimes against humanity by the Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Commission.[3]
