Rumsfeld was a roommate of Frank Carlucci at Princeton University where he graduated in 1954 with a degree in political science.

In January 1981 Donald Rumsfeld, as CEO of Searle, reportedly stated that he would “call in his markers” and make a push to get aspartame approved. Rumsfeld had reportedly hand picked Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes Jr. to be the new FDA Commissioner for the new president, Ronald Reagan. Hayes appointed a 5-person Scientific Commission to review the safety of aspartame, which voted 3 – 2 decision against, a decision which was recersed in 1981.[2] In December 1983, still working for G.D. Searle & Co., Rumsfeld wa sent by Ronald Reagan to visit the Middle East, including Saddam Hussein.
