Career

The career of Schulte-Hillen began when he joined in 1969 with Bertelsmann in the responsibility for the printing. In 1981 he took over the chair of the board of the Gruner + Jahr AG. Six years later, in 1987, he was Deputy CEO of Bertelsmann AG. At the age of 60, he joined the Supervisory Board of G + J and the Bertelsmann AG (both as chairman).

His wife Irene is CEO of the German Music Foundation.

His brother Karl-Hermann Schulte-Hillen was victim advocate in thalidomide scandal.

Gruner + Jahr AG

Under his leadership G + J has multiplied sales and earnings; G + J became the largest media holding company in Germany. He was involved in the scandal of the fake Hitler diaries in Stern.[1] and the failure of the magazine Tango, which was set in 1995 after 37 issues.

In 2007 Schulte-Hillen sold his 1.6% stake in the BV German newspaper holding company.
