On 10 May 2013, Guatemalan General Rios Montt (friend of Ronald Reagan) became the only former head of state ever to have been convicted in his own country for genocide. On 8 July 2015 a Guatemalan court stated that the trial must be abandoned, as Montt was "mentally incompetent to stand trial". A retrial of his case had been promised, but Eric Zuesse opines that this "seems unlikely".
