Horst Gerlach was a German politician of the Social Democratic Party of Germany and President of Association of European Border Regions.

Career

After attending the state high school in Lötzen, Gerlach worked in his parents' business in 1936/37. 1937/38 he did mandatory work conscription (Reichsarbeitsdienst) then, military service and between 1939 and 1945 was as a marine in the Navy.

After the end of the war, Gerlach took up a job as an administrative clerk in the labor administration in the state of Lower Saxony, where he worked himself up to management.

Political work

Gerlach was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany and was elected deputy chairman of the SPD sub-district Weser-Ems in 1947.

Gerlach was a council member of the city of Wittmund in 1948/49 and from 1956 to 1961 a council member of the city of Leer. From 1961 to 1976 he was a member of the district council of the district of Leer.

He was a member of the German Bundestag from 1961 to 1976.

He was President of the Association of European Border Regions 1975-79, a position that has had a high number of Bilderberg-attendees, even though he was not one of them.

From 1966 to 1977 he was also a member of the European Parliament, where he worked on the first proposals for the development of a new legal instruments to foster cross-border cooperation.[1]

From 1980 to 1983 he was a social attaché at the German Embassy in Rome.
