Not to be confused with the Luxembourgian physics professor with the same name.

Jean-Pierre, Baron Hansen is a Belgian corporate executive. He is currently vice-chairman of the executive committee and senior executive vice-president of French multinational corporation Suez, in charge of operations.[1]

Career

Jean-Pierre Hansen holds a master's degree in electrical engineering (University of Liège[2]), a degree in economics (Panthéon-Assas University[2]) and a PhD in engineering (Paris VI[2]).[1] He entered the electricity and gas sector in 1975.[1]

He was CEO of Electrabel from 1992 to March 1999. [1] Since January 2005, he has been vice-chairman and again CEO of Electrabel.[1] Since March 1999, he has also held the position of chairman of the executive committee of Electrabel.[1] He is also CEO of Suez-Tractebel, chairman of Fabricom and director of Distrigas, Fluxys, AGBAR (Spain) and ACEA (Italy), vice-chairman of the Federation of Enterprises in Belgium (FEB) and associate professor of economics at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) and at the Ecole Polytechnique (Paris).[1] He is also member of the board of directors of ArcelorMittal.

Electragate affair

In 2008, Jean-Pierre Hansen and Patrick Ouart (now personal advisor for justice to French President Nicolas Sarkozy) have been recognized guilty by a Belgian court of "hacking". In February 2004, they tried to spy the telecommunications installation of an employee of Electrabel. The affair had then been called by the Belgian press the "Electragate" affair. [3][4]

At the time, Suez was wary of Electrabel's desire for independence. Suez held a little more than 50% of the shares, and to take total control.

During the trial, Jean-Pierre Hansen, then chairman of the board of directors of Electrabel and in favor of the takeover by Suez, admitted to having entrusted his access card to Electrabel's Brussels headquarters to three IT specialists. The latter were responsible for placing spy devices on the phone and computer of one of his coworkers.[5]

In 2008, Belgian justice stated that an offense has been established - the wiretapping of an Electrabel employee - but the investigating court decided to "suspend the delivery" of its decision, using a specific feature of Belgian law which allows the prosecution to be terminated without it being a dismissal.[5]
