A Haitian government official and businessman who was found dead a week before he was due to testify before the Haitian Senate’s Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

Klaus Eberwein was a Haitian government official and businessman. He was found dead on Wednesday 12 July 2017, a week before he was due to testify before the Haitian Senate’s Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission. He is was reportedly expected to have testified about corruption within the Clinton Foundation.

Career

From May 2012 to February 2015 he was the head of the Fund d'assistance économique et social (the FAES) the Haitian government's department for economic development. During his ministry as a government official, Eberwein was accused of fraud and corruption, particularly as regards his method of disbursing donations to Haiti after the earthquake there.

WorldNetDaily reported on 15 July 2017 that "According to Eberwein, a paltry 0.6 percent of donations granted by international donors to the Clinton Foundation with the express purpose of directly assisting Haitians actually ended up in the hands of Haitian organizations. A further 9.6 percent ended up with the Haitian government. The remaining 89.8 percent – or $5.4 billion – was funneled to non-Haitian organizations."

Death

Eberwein was found in a motel room shot in his head. According to the local physician who examined the body after the death, it was probably a suicide. Snopes reported that " it appears that Eberwein had fallen on hard times. An Uber spokesperson confirmed that he worked as a driver for a while in South Florida" and claimed that Eberwein's death was a suicide.

Timing

He died just before he was heard by the Ethiopian Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission of the Haitian Senate. A commission investigating the management of the PetroCaribe funds, the money that Haiti receives from the Venezuela s oil program. During the hearing he would also have answered questions about the role of the Clinton Foundation in the distribution of aid and gifts after the earthquake.

He was reportedly in good spirits before his death, and planning on opening a restaraunt.

Baxter Dmitry quoted [[[Charles Ernest Chatelier]], Director General of the Fund for Economic and Social Assistance, as stating “The Directorate General of FAES presents its sympathies to the bereaved families, friends and collaborator that this mourning afflicts. The FAES flag will be flown at half-mast from Wednesday 12th to Tuesday 18th July 2017. May his soul rest in peace.”
