Colonel Lawrence J. Legere was a U.S. Army officer who was advisor to the National Security Council under presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson He attended the 1958 Bilderberg conference.

Background

Lawrence J. Legere was the son of Lawrence J. and Aurore B. Legere. He grew up in Leominster. He graduated from Leominster High School in 1936 and from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. He received his master's and doctoral degrees from Harvard University in political science and international relations.[1]

Career

During World War II, he was a jumpmaster and was wounded in action parachuting into Normandy on D-Day. Later he worked as defense advisor to the National Security Council under presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson. In 1966, he retired from the United States Army. His awards included the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

After his retirement he went to work at MIT's Institute for Defense Analyses. In 1972, he became director of its international division. In 1974, he became defense advisor for the United States mission to NATO.

In 1990, he received the medal and citation of the President's Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service from President George H.W. Bush.

He was a resident of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and a former resident of Leominster, Massachusetts.
