A strongly addictive recreational drug

Methamphetamine is a synthetic drug first synthesised in 1893. It has been used to treat ADHD and obesity, but is rarely prescribed due to concerns of its addictive potential and neurotoxicity. It is an extremely powerful stimulant, strongly euphoric, and highly addictive. It is widely used recreationally. Closely-related pharmaceutical drugs such as Adderall are increasingly used by students seeking to improve their academic performance. It can have profound enhancing effects on alertness, focus, and concentration. Users binging methamphetamine and related drugs often go several days or even weeks without eating or sleeping. The smokable form is termed “crystal”, "ice" or "glass".

History

The drug was used in WW2, especially by bomber pilots, to increase concentration and effectiveness at bombing. Its use caused problems of withdrawal.

Busts

In 1984, deep state operative Oswald LeWinter was arrested in Germany for involvement in a scheme to smuggle chemicals used to manufacture methamphetamine into the United States. He was extradited to the United States and sentenced to six years in prison, but he was released after only two..[1]

A December 2017 seizure of over 1.2 tons of methamphetamine (>$1,000,000,000 worth) was Australia's largest drug bust.[2] In February 2018 the Indonesian navy seized another 1.1 tons, in the same type of vessel that was seized in the earlier shipment.[3]

In 2019, Australian Police reported finding 283kg in a van.[4]
