Norwich University – The Military College of Vermont is a private military college in Northfield, Vermont, United States. It offers around 2,300 study places in various courses leading to a bachelor's or master's degree. Approximately 1200 students are pursuing master's degrees online. As a senior military college, cadet corps students have the right to serve as active duty officers in the US Armed Forces upon graduation from the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC).[1]
History
The current college was founded in 1819 by Alden Partridge as the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy in Norwich. It was the first private military academy in the United States and was created with the aim of training officers who are not only militarily but also humanistically educated. The university has pursued this goal to this day. Accordingly, the academy was also the first university to train a class of the Reserve Officer Training Corps, which pursues exactly this idea. From 1825 to 1835 the academy was conducted in Middletown, Connecticut, from 1835 to 1866 again in Norwich. After a major fire, the academy moved to Northfield that year, where it still exists today.[2]
Cadet Corps
Membership in the cadet corps and participation in the ROTC is no longer necessary for the course itself and a university degree. However, membership is a prerequisite for obtaining an officer's license (commission) upon graduation from the university. The cadets are not soldiers, do not belong to the US armed forces and are therefore not subject to military jurisdiction. The cadet corps is organized as a five-battalion regiment, with senior cadets occupying the senior positions. A special feature of the ROTC program is a Mountain Cold Weather Company, which trains cadets in mountain warfare and combat in cold climates.
