Pedro Moreira Salles is a Brazilian banker, currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of Itaú Unibanco. Heir to one of the biggest fortunes in Brazil, he is among the richest people in the country.

He was selected a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum in 1998.

Education and career

He graduated magna cum laude in Economics and History from the University of California at Los Angeles, attended the Master's program in International Relations at Yale University (without completing it) and the Owners/President Management Program at Harvard University.

During his childhood, between the years 1964 to 1968, he lived and studied in Paris, at the College Saint-Louis de Gonzague. Upon returning to Rio de Janeiro, he completed primary and secondary education at Liceu Franco-Brasileiro.

He joined the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) of Rio de Janeiro in 1977, where he studied Economics for one year, then transferred to the University of California in Los Angeles. She graduated in 1981 and moved to the East Coast of the USA, where he joined the Yale International Relations course in Connecticut.

He returned to Brazil in 1982, when he started working in the family business. In 1983, he moved to São Paulo and was invited to take over the management of the group's agricultural business, Cambuhy Agrícola, in Matão in the interior of the state, where he remained until 1985. In 1986, together with his brother Fernando Moreira Salles, he started to manage the holding company of the Moreira Salles group. In 1989, he joined [[Unibanco]'s Board of Directors, which he presided over from 1997 to 2004. In 2004, he assumed the presidency of the bank, where he remained until 2008, the year of the merger with Banco Itaú.

After the merger, he became chairman of the Board of Directors of Itaú Unibanco, a position he currently holds.

Personal life

Pedro Moreira Salles was born in Washington DC, United States, on October 20, 1959, when his father was ambassador to that country. Son of diplomat, banker and businessman Walther Moreira Salles and Eliza Margarida Gonçalves, he is the brother of Fernando Moreira Salles, chairman of the CBMM Board and writer; Walter Salles, film director and producer and João Moreira Salles, an editor and documentary filmmaker. He has been married since 1979 to Marisa Moreira Salles and the father of two children, João Moreira Salles and Antonio Moreira Salles.
