The Quds Force (from the word al-Quds, meaning Jerusalem) is a unit in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) specialising in unconventional warfare and military intelligence operations. US Army's Iraq War General Stanley McChrystal describes the Quds Force as an organisation roughly analogous to a combination of the CIA and the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) in the United States.[1] Responsible for extraterritorial operations, the Quds Force supports non-state actors in many countries, including Lebanese Hezbollah, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza and the West Bank, Yemeni Houthis, and Shia militias in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.[2]

The Quds Force is considered a terrorist organisation by Canada, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the United States.

The Quds Force reports directly to the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei.[3] It was commanded by Major General Qassem Soleimani until he was killed by an airstrike at Baghdad International Airport on 3 January 2020.[4][5] Brigadier General Esmail Ghaani was appointed as commander of the Quds Force on the same day.[6]
