DescriptionMilitary exercise training in both sides in unconventional warfare, both supporting guerillas and practicing counter-insurgency]]

Robin Sage is a yearly military exercise training both sides in unconventional warfare, both supporting guerillas and practicing counter-insurgency.

The exercise, held every year in North Carolina since 1974, is set in the fictional country of Pineland. is the final test for Special Forces Qualification Course training.[1][2]

Scenario

Pineland’s legitimate government, which was friendly towards the United States, has been deposed via a coup. Guerilla forces have now risen up in an attempt to fight against this occupying force, and the Green Berets are infiltrating the country to both assist and train the guerilla forces.[3] The exercise will of course give experience in counter-insurgency as well.

The candidates face off against seasoned service members from units across Fort Bragg, as well as specially trained civilians. The setting is “characterized by armed conflict,” forcing the soldiers to solve problems in a real world setting. “These military members act as realistic opposing forces and guerrilla freedom fighters, also known as Pineland resistance movement.”[1]

In 2002, one soldier was killed and another wounded when a Moore County sheriff’s deputy mistook Robin Sage exercises for criminal activity.[4]

The 2022 two-week exercise will be staged Jan. 22-Feb. 4 on privately owned land. It will be realistic enough to include the sounds of gunfire (blanks) and flares. Exact times, locations and exercise specifics are not provided to the public. [1]
