Simon Robert Lightwood is a British Labour Party politician serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wakefield since the 2022 by-election, following the resignation of Conservative MP, Imran Ahmad Khan, who stood down following his conviction for sexual assault of a minor.
Labour's Simon Lightwood won the 2022 Wakefield by-election with 13,166 votes - a majority of 4,925 - taking the traditional red wall seat back from the Conservatives.[1]

In his victory speech, Simon Lightwood said:
“Tonight the people of Wakefield have spoken on behalf of the British people. They have said unreservedly, Boris Johnson your contempt for this country is no longer tolerated. Your government has no ideas, no plan to address the big issues facing our countries.”[2]
Controversial candidate
The 42-year-old Simon Lightfoot, who is head of communications for Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, said he was “thrilled” to be selected as the Labour candidate. He was chosen over trade unionist Kate Dearden by party members in May 2022 but the entire executive committee of Wakefield’s local Labour group resigned in a row over the selection process. They claim Labour’s National Executive Committee intervened and ensured all local candidates were “stripped out”.
Move to Calderdale
Simon Lightwood, who lived in Wakefield for 10 years before he moved to Calderdale so his husband could be closer to work, said the resignations were “really unfortunate” but he remained “completely focused” on his campaign.[3]
