Stanislaw Rudi Tillich is a German politician and member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

Background

An engineer trained at the Dresden University of Technology, he joined the East German CDU in 1987 and was elected three years later as a member of the People's Chamber. He loses his mandate after reunification but entered the European Parliament as an observer. He was elected there in 1994.

Saxon Politics

He was appointed Minister for Federal and European Policy in the government of the German state of Saxony in 1999 and then began his regional political career. In 2002, the new Minister-President Georg Milbradt chose him to lead the Saxon Chancellery. After the 2004 elections, during which he was elected deputy to the Landtag, he was entrusted with the Ministry of the Environment. He became Minister of Finance three years later.[1]

After Milbradt was swept away by the scandal of the bankruptcy of the public bank Sachsen LB, Stanislaw Tillich was chosen in 2008 as minister-president of Saxony and regional president of the CDU. At the head of a "grand coalition", he managed to form a "black-yellow coalition" following the 2009 elections. He was forced to reconstitute a majority with the SPD after the 2014 election.

In October 2017, he announced his resignation in December, a month after the Christian Democrats lost their supremacy in the Land to the AfD in the federal elections. He was then replaced by Michael Kretschmer.

From 2018 until 2019, Tillich co-chaired the German government's Coal Commission, which was tasked to develop a masterplan before the end of the year on how to phase-out coal and create a new economic perspective for the country's coal-mining regions.[2]
