"National security" jawboning is also used to perpetuate erroneous interpretations of historical events. For example, more than 50 years after the assassinations of JFK, MLK and RFK, US government agencies refuse to release thousands of certain documents or, if they do release them, redact them so they become useless to historians.

What contemporary national security interest could there possibly be in keeping secrets about ancient events? The simplest answer is that, were the truth officially revealed, the national security of the United States would be threatened by an outraged public who would no longer believe anything the government has to say about future occurrences. The government is afraid of a loss of control going forward.

Ergo, Sirhan Sirhan, James Earl Ray and Lee Harvey Oswald were patsies. --User:Coast2coast 20 May 2019
