UNISON is the largest trade union in the United Kingdom with almost 1.4 million members.[1]

UNISON was formed in 1993 when three public sector trade unions, the National Association of Local Government Officers (NALGO), the National Union of Public Employees (NUPE) and the Confederation of Health Service Employees (COHSE) merged.[2]

UNISON's General Secretary is Dave Prentis who took up the post on 1 January 2001 and its Chief Operating Officer (since June 2018) is Emilie Oldknow.

In July 2015, UNISON endorsed Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party leadership campaign.[3] In August 2016 it endorsed Corbyn once again.[4]

In the 2020 Labour Party leadership contest, UNISON endorsed Keir Starmer for leader and Angela Rayner for deputy.[5][6]
