Western Michigan University (WMU) is a public research university in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was established in 1903 by Dwight B. Waldo. Its enrollment, as of the Fall 2019 semester, was 21,470.[1]

History

The educational institution was founded in 1903 as a teacher's college. The oldest part of the WMU is today's College of Education and Human Development. In 1955, the institution previously known as Western Michigan College of Education was renamed Western Michigan College, a year later reorganized into 5 departments: School of Applied Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Education, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and School of Graduate Studies. In 1970 these schools were renamed colleges.[2]
