John Allan Hernelius was a Swedish editor and conservative politician.

Education

Hernelius obtained a law degree at Stockholm University , where he was president first of the law students' union, then of the University's student union and finally of Stockholm's student union, later SSCO (Stockholm's student union central organization).

Svenska Dagbladet

He was CEO of the Newspaper Publishers Association and the Newspaper Employers Association 1945–1949. After that he joined Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) as second editor and responsible publisher, from 1952 he was administrative editor-in-chief and 1955–1969 editor-in-chief. After this, he concentrated on parliamentary work.

Politics

Hernelius was elected to the Riksdag in 1962, where he sat for twenty years. In 1976–1982 he was chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. He was also a member of the Constitutional Committee. In 1979, he was the candidate of the bourgeois majority in the election for Speaker of the Riksdag.

Hernelius was a controversial person, also in his own ranks. During his time as editor-in-chief, SvD was more purely a party organ than it had otherwise been. He had a heavy influence on the right and was an important player in party leadership changes. At the same time, he had an international reputation, among other things he was an adviser to The Times at a critical stage.

Although he was a diligent writer (300 contributions in SvD 1968), he was criticized for devoting too much time to politics at the expense of regular newspaper work.

He was married twice, the first time in 1938–1941 to Carin Ingrid Magnusson and the second time from 1957 to TV journalist Jeanette von Heidenstam.
