Ben J. Wattenberg was chief strategist for Senator Henry Jackson in the early 1970s. He initiated the formation of the Coalition for a Democratic Majority in December 1972, "to defend Cold War liberalism".

In 1979 he attended the Jerusalem Conference on International Terrorism, speaking on "A Politics of Freedom is the Answer".
In 1982 he attended the Bilderberg Conference.
