Boris Jordan is an American billionaire businessman of Russian origins. Speaking both English and Russian fluently, he started his career as a banker in the privatization of Russian state assets in the 1990s, the biggest wealth ever.
His Renaissance Capital group (founded in 1995)[1] of companies have significant connections not only to the Russian government, but to the "usual-suspect" entities in the West including USAID, the Harvard Institute for International Development, and George Soros.[2] In fact, his whole empire might be a front for deeper interests.
Jordan and Soros continue to undertake projects together, as they have with Jordan’s commercial marijuana venture in the 2010s, Curaleaf.[3]
Background
Boris Jordan descends from a Russian family who emigrated to the United States. Boris Jordan's paternal grandfather Boris Mikhailovich Jordan was in the Page Corps until 1907, had fought in the Great War as a Life Guard Ulansky Regiment until mid-1915 after which he served in staff positions, later fought as a White Russian during the Russian Civil War, was evacuated with Wrangel's forces from Crimea in November 1920 and lived in Skopje, Yugoslavia. After World War II, he lived in a displaced person camp Salzburg (possibly indicating some sort of collaboration with the Germans) before emigrating to the United States, where he died on 20 July 1950.[4]
Boris Jordan's father, Aleskey Jordan, taught at an intelligence school in the United States.[5]
Boris holds a Bachelor of Arts from New York University.
Career
He moved to Russia in the early 1990s to carpetbag in the country's transition to a market economy. He worked in the financial sector which launched the new Russian stock exchange and carried out the privatization of state enterprises, the biggest looting of state property in history. He was first an executive at Crédit Suisse-First Boston in Moscow, an investment bank which became one of the leading players in this phase of privatization. He co-founded in 1995, at the age of twenty-eight, the investment group Renaissance Capital which quickly became one of the leading investment banks in Russia.
In 1998, he founded and became the CEO of Sputnik Group, which is a holding company dedicated to diversified investments. The Sputnik Investment Fund is one of the largest private foreign investment funds operating in Russia. Today he specializes in the media, telecommunications, insurance (through Renaissance Assurances) and forest properties.
Renaissance Capital paid Bill Clinton $500,000 for a speech in Russia in June 2010.[6]
He has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 2007.
