(Minister of Economic Affairs)

Responsible for monitoring and assessing Danish Economic development.

The Danish Minister of Economic Affairs was Minister in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, who monitored and assessed economic development.

In November 2001, the Ministry of Economic Affairs in its previous form was abolished. Two of the ministry's most important tasks, namely international economic cooperation, especially in the EU, as well as the responsibility for the government's economic assessment and the government's Economic Review, passed to the Ministry of Finance. The remaining parts of the ministry, including the responsibility for Statistics Denmark and the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority, were merged with the Ministry of Business Affairs, whereby the Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs was formed.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs traditionally distinguished itself as workplace for economists, perhaps most markedly in the first years, when they were relatively few in the central administration. In some governments, the ministry was seen as a suitable platform for the small coalition party in a government, most recently under Marianne Jelved, who could benefit from the expertise in her internal discussions with the Social Democratic ministers, not least Poul Nyrup Rasmussen and Mogens Lykketoft.

The current Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs has been referred to a role as subordinate to the Ministry of Finance in economic policy. Overall, however, the current ministry is far larger than the old ministry, as it includes a very wide range of regulatory tasks within e.g. shipping, patents, competition, housing policy and business support.
