A farmer (also called an agriculturer) is a person engaged in agriculture, raising living organisms for food or raw materials. A farmer can do his own farm work, or hire others to work the farm for him. If enough removed from the daily chores, they could become landed gentry, or the gentry, in Britain largely a historical social class of landowners who could live entirely from rental income, or at least had a country estate.

Traditional individual family farms have increasingly been pushed out by Corporate farming, the practice of large-scale agriculture on farms owned or greatly influenced by large companies. In 1870, almost 50 percent of the U.S. population was employed in agriculture.[1] As of 2008, less than 2 percent of the population is directly employed in agriculture.[2]
