Gualtherus (Guup) baron Krayenhoff worked for the American pharmaceutical company Organon until 1972, then he became CEO and later chairman of the chemical company Akzo.
The war years
Jonkheer (knight) G. Krayenhoff (from 1988 baron Krayenhoff) was a member of the noble branch of the Krayenhoff family.
Krayenhoff was attending boarding school in Switzerland when the war broke out. He graduated in 1941.
In Geneva he met Joost Sluis and Rian Collée, who had already tried in vain to get to Spain from Perpignan. They received new passports via the Dutch military attaché in Bern, making Guup 16 years old and Joost Sluis 50 years old, so that they were no longer of military age. They reached Gibraltar by train and from there they went by boat to England. Also on board were Louis d'Aulnis and Cees Drooglever Fortuyn.
He went to London via Gibraltar. In London he lived for a while with François van 't Sant. He was in London at the same time as Klaas Wagner, among others.
With Pico Goeninx van Zoelen, Krayenhoff joined the Princess Irene Brigade and was sent to Wolverhampton for his first training. He was soon assigned to the RAF. He received his pilot training with Joost Sluis and Rian Collée in Canada.
One evening he was run over in a darkened airport. His hip was broken and the doctors wanted to amputate his leg. He refused and has never regretted it. He did find it frustrating that he could no longer fly and participate in the war.
Postwar
From 1947 Krayenhoff worked for the American pharmaceutical company Organon. From 1957 to 1972 he was director of Organon. He contributed to Organon's growth and internationalization.
From his home in Nijmegen, he played a role in n1969 in the realization of the merger between AKU and KZO to form Akzo NV, a Dutch multinational company which manufactures paints. He became deputy chairman and later chairman of the Board of Directors. In 1978 Krayenhoff stepped down as chairman of the board and became deputy chairman and later chairman of the supervisory board of Akzo until 1993.
Krayenhoff became friends with Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema in London and visited the musical Soldaat van Oranje together with Prince Maurits. After the performance, he put his signature on the wall of the Minerva set.
