György Surányi is a Hungarian economist who was president of the Hungarian National Bank and later regional head of the Italian banking group Intesa Sanpaolo.
Education
In 1977 he graduated from the Karl Marx University of Economics (now Corvinus University of Budapest). He received a doctorate in Economics in 1979. He obtained his candidate degree in [1986]]. In 1996 he received his habilitation in economics at the Budapest University of Economics.[1]
Career
From 1977 to 1986, he was a research fellow and head of the scientific department at the Institute for Financial Research. He then became a consultant to the World Bank in Washington, D.C., until 1987. In 1988 and 1989, he became the government's chief economic policy adviser, and was appointed state secretary of the National Planning Office, a post he held until 1990. In 1990 he was appointed president of the National Bank of Hungary (MNB), but in 1991, when the Central Bank Act was amended, he lost this position.
In 1992 he became CEO of CIB Bank. In 1995 he was again was appointed chairman of the National Bank, nominated by Socialist prime minister Gyula Horn. Together with Lajos Bokros, also the newly appointed Minister of finance, he played a fundamental role in the development and implementation of economic and monetary policy measures that changed the economy.
His new term as chairman of the MNB expired in 2001, after which he became head of Central and Eastern Europe at the Italian banking group Intesa Sanpaolo and has held this position ever since. Within this framework, he is the president of 4 regional banks (CIB, VUB, PBZ, BIB). He also served as a member of the board and supervisory board of several central and Eastern European subsidiary banks of the Italian banking group Intesa Sanpaolo. He is a professor at Corvinus University and George Soros' Central European University (CEU).
