Sir Jonathon Espie Porritt, 2nd Baronet,[1] is a British environmentalist and writer championing that the country must drastically reduce its population.

He attended the 1999 Bilderberg meeting, and in 2000 was appointed the inaugural Chair of the incoming Labour government's UK Sustainable Development Commission (SDC), set up by prime minister Tony Blair.

Early life

Jonathon Porritt was born in London, the son of Arthur Porritt, Baron Porritt, 11th Governor-General of New Zealand and his second wife, Kathleen Peck.[2] Lord Porritt was as a senior officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War II.[3]

Porritt was educated at Wellesley House School, Broadstairs, Kent;[4] Eton College;[5] and Magdalen College, University of Oxford, where he earned a first class degree in modern languages.[6]

Career

He is known for his advocacy of the Green Party of England and Wales, where he was co-chair 1980-83[7][8]. He was formerly Director of Friends of the Earth (1984-90); chairman of UNED-UK (1993-96); chairman of Sustainability South West, the South West Round Table for Sustainable Development (1999-2001); a Trustee of WWF UK (1991-2005). [9]

UK population reduction to 30 million

Porritt is a patron of the population reduction advocacy group Population Matters, (formerly known as the Optimum Population Trust). Porritt has stated that population growth is a serious threat to the global environment and that family planning, including both birth control and abortion,[10] is a part of the answer to "global warming".

Jonathon Porritt, one of Gordon Brown's leading green advisers, is to warn that Britain must drastically reduce its population if it is to build a sustainable society.

Porritt's call will come at this week's annual conference of the Optimum Population Trust (OPT), of which he is patron.

The trust will release research suggesting UK population must be cut to 30m if the country wants to feed itself sustainably.

Porritt said: "Population growth, plus economic growth, is putting the world under terrible pressure.

"Each person in Britain has far more impact on the environment than those in developing countries so cutting our population is one way to reduce that impact."[11]
