Luca Attanasio was an Italian diplomat who was assassinated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2021.[1]

Education

Attanasio grew up in Limbiate, Lombardy. He completed his studies in business administration in 2001 at the Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi in Milan.

Career

He began his diplomatic career in 2003. From 2006 he was trade secretary at the Italian Embassy in Bern. In 2010 he moved to Casablanca, Morocco as consul. In 2013 he returned to Italy as head of the Secretariat of the Directorate General for Globalization and Global Issues. After professional stays in Nigeria, he moved to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2017, where he worked as an ambassador from 2019 until his death. He was one of the youngest ambassadors of Italy.[2]

Assassination

Attanasio suffered gunshot wounds during an attack and attempted abduction on a convoy of the United Nations World Food Program in eastern Congo and died at the military hospital in Goma. The convoy was on its way from Goma to a school food project in the Rutshuru region. In addition to Attanasio, the Congolese UN driver and an Italian military policeman who worked as a bodyguard were also killed in the incident. Rangers (game wardens) who happened to be nearby finally repulsed the attack.[3]

Attanasio was married and a father of three.[4]
