Military Headquarters

Naples is home to NATO's Allied Joint Force Command Naples (JFC Naples), effectively a renaming in 2004 of its predecessor command, Allied Forces Southern Europe (AFSOUTH), started in 1951. Its responsibility is the Mediterranean and some adjoining areas, including Hungary and the former Yugoslavia. The command is held by an admiral of the US Navy, who is also the commander of the US Naval Forces Europe-Africa (NAVEUR-NAVAF). Since 2015, the Naples Headquarters has commanded the NATO Aegis Ashore Missile Defense Site Deveselu part of the NATO missile defense system.

The city is also HQ of the US Sixth Fleet, The Sixth Fleet is a numbered fleet of the United States Navy operating as part of United States Naval Forces Europe-Africa. Since 1948, it has been continually engaged in affairs around the Mediterranean, and, on occasion, further afield. It was involved in numerous NATO maritime exercises, the U.S. intervention in Lebanese in 1958, confrontation with the Soviets during the October War of 1973, clearance of the Suez Canal after 1973, several confrontations with Libya during the 1980s, and maintenance of task forces in the Adriatic during the wars in former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. It launched airstrikes on Libya again during the Libyan war of 2011.
