A sock puppet, on the Internet, is a fake account made to amplify a user's reach to be able to influence discussions on a wider scale. It can entail mostly copy pasted content by a human operator or automated bot activity that does this - AI being increasingly used in the area in the 2020s. Some suspect that bot traffic already "may outpace human-generated content entirely".[1]
Alternatively, it can refer to a puppet leader.

Persona Management
Persona management entails the use of software by which to facilitate the use of multiple fake online personas, ie sockpuppets", generally for the use of propaganda, disinformation, or as a surveillance method by which to discover details of a human target via social interactions.[2][3][4]
Eglin Air Force Base
In 2013 Eglin Air Force Base was named as having the highest visitor count on Reddit.[5][6][7] A paper by the Air Force Research Laboratory (Munitions Directorate) at Eglin AFB discussed, with the background of revolutions in mind, how social media interactions can be measured and moved into a "dynamics model" to see how consensus in a given network can be reached.
Crowds on Demand
Crowds on Demand is a US based service that provides clients with hired actors to pose as protesters, among other things. It also offers letter-writing, social proof, and phone-banking campaigns. For example it provided a favorable crowd for a new foreign UN leader.[8]
"Crowds on Demand can assist subjects of demonstrations and hostile PR campaigns with forming appropriate responses. Having organized thousands of demonstrations and advocacy efforts, we are well positioned to provide defensive services to clients struggling with how best to interpret and respond to these actions."[9]
