Activities
In 1989, Orbán received a scholarship from the Soros Foundation to study political science at Oxford University/Pembroke College.[2] His personal tutor was the Hegelian political philosopher Zbigniew Pełczyński.
Arthur Finkelstein
Starting in 2008, Orbán received electoral help from George Birnbaum and Arthur Finkelstein, when his old friend Benyamin Netanyahu introduced him to the two people who would guide his success. Finkelstein was described by the Jerusalem Post as "the master political consultant who changed political campaigning all over the world forever by identifying and mobilizing disaffected voters on the Right through a kind of divisive, in-your-face messaging that has become the new normal." [3] Finkelstein was influential in getting Republican candidates elected, including working as a central campaign member for Ronald Reagan in 1980. He also worked in Israel, where he was hired by former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and was instrumental in helping Netanyahu pull off an upset victory in 1996.[4]
Viktor Orbán had a "coronavirus law" passed to allow him rule by decree during the state of emergency for an indefinite period[5], which Michael Bociurkiw in CNN termed an "outrageous power grab". The legislation includes a provision for sentences of up to five years in prison for spreading "fake news". Reporters Without Borders stated that "in reality it is the government that can, at the outset, arbitrarily decide whether a media report is true or false."[6]
Policies
| Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was interviewed by Tucker Carlson in August 2021. |
"His decision to build razorwire fencing and put water cannons at the ready on his borders — all the while needling Europe’s chattering classes with undisguised glee — shifted the debate from how to accommodate the flow of refugees to how to stop it."[1]
He opposes George Soros interfering in Hungary.
