Wolfgang Hager is a German economist[1].

Education

After secondary schooling in Germany, he completed studies (M.A. English Literature) in Sweden at the Universities of Stockholm, Uppsala and Gothenburg in 1965. Since then, his working language, including five books and hundreds of articles, has been English. He completed a Ph.D. programme in international economics at the Wharton School, U. of Pennsylvania (1969), and obtained a Dr. Phil from Bonn University in 1978.

Career

Between 1970-74, he was Director of Studies of an (unspecified) Brussels think-tank. 1974-79, Senior Fellow, International Economics, at the German Institute for Foreign Policy, Bonn.1979-1985, Professorial Fellow at the European University, Florence, Visiting Professor at Johns Hopkins, Bologna and Georgetown, Washington.

After 1986, he was Professor at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland and founding Partner of European Research Associates, a consultancy. From 1991-1996 he was founding Director of the European Centre for Infrastructure Studies. From 1997 he divided his time between consultancy and duties as Senior Fellow, Centre for European Policy Studies, Brussels.

Between 2002-2010 he worked in Beirut on behalf of the European Commission as a technical advisor to government departments and the Prime Minister's Office. For a total of some thirty years, he served as a consultant to business and the European Commission on a wide range of sectors, ranging from finance to telecoms, manufacturing to agriculture, environment and transport to international trade. In this capacity, he became familiar with an equally large range of specialized vocabularies, which is standing him in good stead as a translator.

Since 2013 he lives in Palermo, Sicily, splitting his time between blue water sailing, working as an evaluator for EU’s LIFE programme specializing in industrial technologies, and as a translator specializing in German and Italian to English. Although a German native, he has been certified as a native English speaker by the translation platform, Proz.com.
