The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, (RICO) was used during the 1980s and 1990s to bring charges against several Mafia figures.

Adam Curtis claimed in the documentary The Power of Nightmares that the US government coined the name Al-Qaeda to apply the RICO laws, which required a named organisation.
