Randa William became head of the Islamic Media Unit in July 2005 after having worked in it since March 2005. She also worked in the British government's sector and in other ministries since November 2005. She was born in Egypt and brought up and educated in Britain specializing in law and then Arabic after graduation.[1]

In an interview with Al-Quds al-Arab in London, she stated that the setting up of the Islamic Media Unit was necessary after 11 September 2001 to 'confront the changing world event'. The Unit she claimed aimed to 'bolster the contacts between the Arab and Islamic media organs and the British government' [2]
