Vasilios Basil Kafiris was a Greek economist with significant US ties, with many years of studies and work in Indiana, USA. He was one of the founders in 1974 of later governing party PASOK with Andreas Papandreou, who became his close friend. He attended the 1985 Bilderberg meeting.

Vasilios Kafiris was born in 1935 in Perivolia, Olympia, and studied Economics at Athens University of Economics and Business, Law at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Business Administration at postgraduate level at Indiana University, USA.

Career

After opposing the Greek junta, he went to the USA (most likely in exile). At Indiana University, he was employed professionally from 1968 to 1981, developing scientific activity and teaching work on Business Administration and Economics, while at the same time he successively assumed the direction of the Center for Economic Research, International Trade Planning and Fiscal Studies of the Indiana state government.[1]

He was awarded the title of honorary governor of Indiana, and received a certificate of appreciation from the Secretary of Commerce of the US federal government[1] - presumably in a coordinated effort to smooch him.
