John Tower was a US Senator and Chairperson of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board until he died in a plane crash in 1991, one day after his friend, John Heinz III, was killed in an airplane incident.

Background

Tower was the son of a Methodist minister, born in Houston, Texas on 29th September, 1925.[1]

A May 1989 report of a meeting aboard Robert Maxwell's yacht, including John Tower, John Lehman, Tom Bolan, Mort Janklow, Thomas Pickering, Peter Kalikow, Ghislaine Maxwell, Helene Atkin and Donald Trump[2]

Career

In 1990 George H. W. Bush appointed Tower as chairman of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. Tower published his autobiography, Consequences: A Personal and Political Memoir in 1991.

Death

John Tower was killed in a plane crash new New Brunswick, Georgia, on 5th April, 1991. According to the New York Times the “failure of a severely worn part in the plane’s propeller control unit caused the aircraft to spin out of control.” This was a day after his friend, John Heinz III, was killed when his Piper Aerostar PA60 came down after colliding with a helicopter in Montgomery County.[1] He and his daughter (also killed in the crash)[3] had just cooperated in the publishing of Tower’s memoir. They were collaborating on a second “tell-all” book about Iran-contra that was reportedly going to “name names” including that of George W. Bush.[4]
