The Dutch Minister for Suriname and Netherlands Antilles Affairs is often the same person as the Interior Minister or Foreign Minister.

Overview

Before 945 there was a separate Ministry of colonies. From 1945 to 1951 there was a minister of Overseas Territories, and from 1951 to 1957 a minister of overseas parts of the realm.[1]

In 1959, a different system was adopted. The portfolio coordination of affairs concerning Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles was - as a second focus area - added to that of one of the ministers.

The ministerial areas of responsibility have changed over time. The responsibility for Suriname ended when it became independent in 1975. After the granting of separate status to Aruba in 1986, the name was changed again, now in coordination of matters concerning the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.

In 1998, the portfolio was placed under the Ministry of the interior.[1]
