Chief Executive Officer, Fiat
| ||||||||||||||
Cesare Romiti was Chief Executive Officer of Fiat, the main company of the Agnelli family.
Background
Son of a postal worker, he graduated in economic and commercial sciences, studying at night and working during the day at the Pasquetti transport company in Rome as an accountant, to put together some money after the death of his father at only 47 years old.
Career
In 1947, he began his career at the Bombrini Parodi Delfino munitions group as financial director but very soon he occupied the position of general manager[1]. In 1968, he retained these same positions in the chemical group Snia Viscosa after a merger incorporation with his former employer. He then meets Enrico Cuccia, the great strategist of the Italian financial bank Mediobanca. Two years later, the sprawling Italian state holding company IRI - Institute for Industrial Reconstruction appointed him initially general director, and then deputy director, of the Italian national airline Alitalia.
During the year 1973 he worked for the Italian national road company Italstat, then joined the Fiat group where, with Umberto Agnelli and Carlo De Benedetti he was part of the group's management triumvirate. After having dismissed Carlo From Benedetti 100 days after his arrival, he was appointed general manager in 1976.[2] Within the Fiat Group, he held the positions of Managing Director and then President. Gianni Agnelli, having reached the age limit (75 years) then became Honorary President. During his presence at the Fiat Group, he worked for the takeover of the manufacturer Alfa Romeo, a company belonging to the public holding IRI, to avoid its takeover by the American Ford group. He will do the same with Telettra, flagship of Italian telephone engineering.[1]
Family
He was married since 1948 to Luigia 'Gina' Gastaldi (1923-2001), a very reserved woman. They had two sons, Maurizio (1949) and Piergiorgio (1951). In addition to his mistress Michi Gioia, Romiti famously had numerous other relationships, including those with Maria Gabriella of Savoy, with the designer Chiara Boni and with Anna Coliva, director of the Galleria Borghese.[3][4][5][6]
