Not to be confused with his more famous uncle, the Dutch mathematician with the same name, Luitzen Egbertus Jan "Bertus" Brouwer (1881-1966).

Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer was a Dutch petroleum executive.

Background

His father was a geologist of international renown, his uncle, after whom he is named, a world-renowned mathematician. He himself graduated at the age of 21 in Delft as a mining engineer.[1]

Career

After his studies, Brouwer joined the Batavian Petroleum Company, where he worked as a geologist organizer and manager in the Far East. During World War 2, as liaison officer to General McArthur's forces, he was involved in the recapture of Hollandia and other parts of the Dutch East Indies.

From 1946 he filled increasingly responsible positions at the company. He ended his active career as president-director of the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company (Shell) in 1971. After that, he remained attached to the 'Royal' for another ten years as a commissioner.[2]
