A naturally occurring psychedelic drug with thousands of years of use for religious purposes.

Mescaline is a psychedelic drug used recreationally.

History

It has been used for at least 5700 years by Native Americans in Mexico.

Effects

It is a psychedelic, with effects similar to (but distinct from) those produced by LSD and psilocybin. Researchers from investigators at the University of Alabama at Birmingham published research in 2017 that suggested that mescaline use was associated with a decreased likelihood of antisocial criminal behavior.[1]

Legal status

This is different in different countries, with religious exemptions and sometimes a different status for the cactus as against the purified compound.
