Semafor is a news website launched in 2022 with "the aim of boosting trust in global news"[1]

Founders

It was founded in 2022 by Ben Smith, a former editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed News. When at Buzzfeed, Smith published the Steele dossier, a made-up "intelligence dossier" on Donald Trump as part of Russiagate.

Funding

Operations were initially supported by $25 million in "investment" funding, including from Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of FTX.[1] Semafor launched with approximately 60 employees[2], an impressive budget for an area where it can be hard to make money.
