Henri Nallet was a French politician. At the end of his career, he attended the 2001 Bilderberg meeting, possibly in connection with the topic What Should Governments Do About Food Quality?.

Education

Henri Nallet was the son of an optician. He studied political science and public law at the Institut d'études politiques in Bordeaux.

Career

From 1966 to 1970 he was a functionary of the FNSEA, a trade union confederation for farmers. He then moved to the Institut national de la recherche agronomique, an agricultural research and consulting institute. in 1973 he became assistant to Jean Charlot in the Education and Research Department of Political Science at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.

After the election of François Mitterrand as President, Nallet was appointed to the cabinet in the function of an adviser on agriculture and thus became a member of the General Secretariat of the government. In 1985, he replaced Michel Rocard as Minister of Agriculture under the government of Prime Minister Laurent Fabius. He held this post between 4 April 1985 and 20 March 1986 and again between 28 June 1988 and 2 October 1990 (under the Michel Rocard government).

Immediately afterwards, he succeeded Pierre Arpaillange as Minister of Justice of France under the government of Michel Rocard (later Édith Cresson) until April 2, 1992.[1] In April 1991, during a corruption affair (the Urba affair) relating to the hidden financing of the French Socialist Party, the investigating judge Thierry Jean-Pierre searched the Urba headquarters in Paris. Henri Nallet denounced the judge's action as "a savage attack" and had the judge dismissed.[2][3]

Henri Nallet represented the Département of Yonne for the Socialist Party of France from 1986 to 1988 in the National Assembly.

Between 1992 and 1994, he wrote successively two reports, one for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the other for the European Commission. This work focused on the issue of agricultural policy in the context of European enlargement.

When he was elected to the National Assembly again in 1997, his knowledge of the European institutions allowed him to be elected president of the Assembly delegation for the European Union. In this capacity, he published several reports on European issues and ensures the transcription of EU legislation into French law.[4] He chaired the preparatory committee for the introduction of the euro.

He was mayor of the Burgundian small town of Tonnerre from 1989 to 1998.[5]

From 1992 to 1997, Nallet was a State Councillor (Conseiller d'état). In 1998 he was Vice-president of the Party of European Socialists.

He was honorary president of the Fondation Jean Jaurès from 2013 until 2022.
