Luigi Ramponi was an Italian general and politician, General Commander of the Guardia di Finanza from 1989 to 1991 and director of SISMI from 1991 to 1992.

Ramponi attended the Military Academy of Modena in 1949-1951 and later the Weapon Application School in Turin. He was appointed second lieutenant of the Bersaglieri in 1951. After having attended the training course for parachutist and army observer pilot, he commanded air units of the 4th and 8th Artillery Regiment, of the Army Aviation Training Center and, subsequently the XI Battalion Bersaglieri of the “Folgore” mechanized division.

He attended the Army School of War from 1965 to 1968 and held positions in the General Staff of the 5th Army Corps. He was a teacher at the War School and from 1977 to 1980 he held the position of Military Attaché at the Italian Embassy in Washington. Promoted to colonel in 1972, he commanded the 1st Bersaglieri Regiment.

Appointed brigadier general in 1979, he commanded the "Garibaldi" mechanized brigade and from 1982 to 1985 was Commander of the Military Region of Sardinia. Since 5 December 1985 he has held the position of Head of the Office of the Secretary General of Defense and National Director of Armaments.

General of the army corps, on 1 April 1988 he was appointed Deputy Chief of the Defense Staff. From 11 January 1989 to 31 August 1991 he was Commander General of the Guardia di Finanza.

From 20 August 1991 he was director of SISMI, military intelligence, until 21 July 1992, when he was replaced by the new defense minister Salvo Andò. The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the Secret Services chaired by Gerardo Chiaromonte concluded[1] that there were no grounds to remove him from the post after just eleven months. In his place was put Cesare Pucci, a personal friend of Giuliano Amato and "protege" of the Craxi-clique Fulvio Martini, former director of Sismi for seven years and four months.

Ramponi was a member of the Trilateral Commission[2].
