Hong Kong is an island territory off the cost of China that was a colony of the British Empire from 1842 controlled by the UK until peacefully returned to China in 1997. As a special administrative region, Hong Kong maintains separate governing and economic systems from that of mainland China under a principle of "one country, two systems" - a promise under stress and eroding.

2014 Protests
"The Umbrella Movement (aka Umbrella Revolution or Occupy Movement) was a political movement that emerged during the Hong Kong democracy protests of 2014. Its name arose from the use of umbrellas as a tool for passive resistance to the Hong Kong Police's use of pepper spray to disperse the crowd during a 79-day occupation of the city demanding more transparent elections, which was sparked by the decision of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPCSC) of 31 August 2014 that prescribed a selective pre-screening of candidates for the 2017 election of Hong Kong's chief executive." ~ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umbrella_Movement + https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Hong_Kong_protests
