Mark John Richard Simpson was the first U.S. Interpol President (1984-1988) and is a former director of the United States Secret Service.[1]
Career
Simpson served in the United States Army, graduated from Loyola College in Montreal before attending Portia Law School.[2]
Simpson joined the Secret Service in 1962 during his time at Portia Law (graduating in 1964 and was elected as his Law School President) and became Special Agent with the Presidential Protective Division in 1978.[3] As Director, Simpson supervised an unprecedented growth and expansion of the Secret Service. He introduced new computer technology; directed the expansion of national and international field offices; supervised the Service's new investigative responsibilities in the areas of false identification documents, of access device and computer fraud, and financial institution fraud.[4][5]
From 1984 to 1988, Simpson was the first American President of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol). During his tenure he directed several major programs for INTERPOL. The organization was dominated by the French for decades after World War II. Simpson took over after U.S. annoyance with with "lax French attitudes towards international terrorism", and refusing to issue an international arrest warrant in 1980 for convicted spy Christopher Boyce after his escape from a federal prison in California.[6]
After retiring as Director in 1992, Simpson became a commissioner in the United States Parole Commission for 2 terms.[3]
