Mercer University is a Christian, Baptist university in Macon in the state of Georgia, USA. It was founded in Penfield in 1833 by Baptist minister Adiel Sherwood, and named after Baptist leader Jesse Mercer. In 1837 the school received college status, and remained open throughout the Civil War under the name Mercer University.

It is the oldest private university in the state and enrolls more than 9,000 students in 12 colleges and schools.

Mercer University alumni include 21 United States Representatives, 12 Governors, four United States Senators, two Pulitzer Prize winners, two Rhodes Scholars and a U.S. Attorney General.[1]
