The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is an "independent federal agency of the United States government within the executive branch", charged with the preservation and documentation of government and historical records.

Missing documents

Throughout the years, a number of documents have been stolen from the archives.[1]

Sandy Berger admitted theft of classified documents in October 2003 from a Washington National Archives reading room prior to testifying before the 9/11 Commission.

In November 2016 it emerged that the National Archives lost a two-terabyte hard drive of data about the administration of Bill Clinton at some time between January 30, 2009 and March 24, 2009. However, a backup existed.[2]
